From Relief to a Lifetime Commitment

In February 2020 the world witnessed a catastrophe of an unprecedented scale – the Corona Virus outbreak.

By March 2020 it was crystal clear that marginalised groups would suffer severely from the economic lockdowns and subsequent slowdown of the economy. The world witnessed thousands of migrant workers walking on foot without much means to survive, towards their home states.

In Assam, the Adivasi community which constitutes the entire tea garden labour force – both permanent and temporary, would be severely impacted due to the economic shutdown in the early stages, and the subsequent slowdown.

Other members of the Adivasi community who had moved out of the gardens (known as ex-tea garden workers) are either daily wagers or small farmers. All were likely to suffer from severe shortage of money and food.

Injot’s work thus started with our founder Director Anjali Tirkey leading a relief program (March 2020 to September 2020) in Kokrajhar, Karbi-Anglong, Golaghat, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Baksa, Kamrup Metro, Lakhimpur and Kamrup Rural district for people who had lost their livelihood during the nation-wide lockdown due to the Corona Virus pandemic. Initially it was done with partnership with other NGOs and organisations, and later under the banner of Injot.

We visualise a self-reliant Adivasi society with a life of dignity through preservation of ancestral heritage, and social, economic and political empowerment.

Empower the Adivasi community of Assam to make informed choices for a progressive future through

  • interventions for healing of generational trauma,
  • an all-rounded educational approach for children, youth and adults,
  • and promotion of and training in livelihood alternatives and enterprise.

Injot Trust is a Guwahati (Assam, India) based not for profit organization founded in August 2020. Its Founder Director is Anjali Tirkey – a photo essayist, feature writer and philanthropist. The organization focuses on working in the field of community development, livelihood, education and advocacy of human rights for the Adivasi community of Assam.

Injot was officially launched on August 9, 2020 – the International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples in honour of the ancestral wisdom of the indigenous people; to live in harmony with nature, to care for future generations, to listen to our body and soul, to celebrate our own selves as an inherent member of this existence. Anjali Tirkey, the Founder Director found partners in Arindita Gogoi and Wilson Hansda to share her vision of adivasi empowerment in Assam.

Soon, Injot would kick-start several initiatives – a Lockdown Learning Centre which would be later rechristened as Injot Learning Centre, livelihood interventions for people in select villages of Kamrup Metro and Kokrajhar districts, and consistent social media and news media campaigns to bring forth the issues and challenges faced by the Adivasi community of Assam. Besides this Injot regularly engages in relief work and actively acts as an implementation bridge between the government and the community.

Anjali Tirkey

Founder Director

A photo essayist, feature writer and philanthropist, and former President of a non profit organisation working with the Adivasi community of Assam, Anjali Tirkey has worked for the Tea Plantation Workers and indigenous communities for the last two decades and represented their cause in the United Nations. She has been actively involved with tea plantation workers in various capacities including making documentaries and photo features highlighting Adivasi heritage and human rights issues faced by the community. An avid traveller, and deep sea and wreck diver, she is also the recipient of the Excellence in Journalism Award by UCIP in 2007.

Wilson Hansda

Trustee

A social worker and political activist, Wilson brings in his experience of working in the development sector for many years. He received Certificate of Excellence on the occasion of 69th Republic Day, 2018 for excellent contribution towards Social Works and has served in the position of General Secretary, International Human Rights Council (IHRC), North East Zonal Board (NEZB). He is presently an MCLA (nominated) in Bodoland Territorial Region, Assam and was sworn in as EM (Executive Member) of Bodoland Territorial Council in July 2021.

Arindita Gogoi

Trustee

She is an experiential educator, teacher, trainer, and an education consultant, and has been working with children and youth across geographies for fifteen years. She is the Founder of Three Dots Project that works in the area of parent support, child engagement and educators’ and facilitators’ training. She has facilitated at PYE Global’s Power of Hope Camp (Whidbey Island, USA) and regularly mentors ITI trainers, facilitators and social development professionals. She  actively incorporates cooperative game and expressive art in her facilitation practice.

IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION: After being sworn in as EM (Executive Member) of Bodoland Territorial Council, Wilson Hansda has resigned from the position of Trustee of Injot Trust as per the norms. While our association in official capacity has ended, his friendship, support and goodwill will always be there for Injot Trust.
